Samyan
Samyan is an experimental data visualization project documenting the declining printing district of Bangkok before its transformation. By collecting print waste from local shops, the project maps out service quality, pricing, and printing differences, visually representing the area’s significance to design students.

Problem:
How can data visualization and physical artifacts document the transformation of Samyan’s printing district before its disappearance?
Process:
- On-Site Research: Explored Samyan’s printing ecosystem, analyzing why printing shops were concentrated in the area.
- Data Collection & Mapping: Gathered printed materials from multiple shops, comparing price, quality, and service.
- Experimental Visualization: Developed a layered print-based mapping system, using scanned and reprinted waste materials to rank shop quality.
- Conceptual Approach: Recreated Samyan’s printing culture in a tactile, visual representation, preserving its legacy before redevelopment.

Solution:
A data-driven visual mapping of Samyan, using physical print artifacts as a form of storytelling and urban documentation.
Outcome:
- Successfully captured the essence of Samyan’s printing culture before its transition.
- Created a non-traditional data visualization blending physical print media and urban research.
- Served as a historical record of a design student hub, merging personal experience with urban data collection.
