Problem
How can an annual architectural magazine use editorial design to creatively address the issue of stress and mental well-being for students?
Background
Ruenthai (เรือนไทย) – meaning "Thai house" – is the annual magazine of the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University. Since its inception, the magazine’s title has played with a rhyming theme involving 'Thai' each year. The magazine's title follows a playful rhyming theme with "Thai," and for the 2018 edition, the theme was Ruent(Tylenol). This issue focused on how students and architects manage stress and alleviate mental fatigue—relating it metaphorically to a "headache" and how design can be a solution.

Process
- Concept & Theme Development: Collaborated with the editorial team to establish a cohesive theme focused on stress relief and mental well-being.
- Content Curation & Research: Conducted research on how architecture students and professionals experience stress, curating relevant articles, essays, and visual content.
- Art Direction & Layout Design: Designed a bold yet structured framework for the magazine, balancing text, graphic illustrations, and playful comic-style page breaks to engage readers.
- Collaboration & Execution: Worked closely with a team of 10 contributors, including writers, illustrators, and designers, ensuring that every element of the magazine aligned with the theme.
- Commercial & Editorial Balance: Managed the integration of commercial advertisements while maintaining the magazine’s artistic and editorial integrity.
Solution
A visually engaging and conceptually rich architecture magazine that blended editorial storytelling, structured layouts, and expressive graphics to create an interactive reading experience. The use of visual metaphors, humor, and dynamic compositions made stress relief a compelling and relatable topic for its audience.
Outcome
- 500+ copies distributed, reinforcing the magazine’s influence as an annual tradition within the Faculty of Architecture.
- Successfully translated an abstract concept into a tangible editorial experience, making stress relief an accessible and engaging topic through design.
- Enhanced user engagement through a combination of structured storytelling, playful graphics, and bold layouts.
