Problem

How can the geothermal activity of Beppu’s Oniishibozu Jigoku mud pools be translated into a tangible, sensory experience?

Process

  • Cultural Research: Studied the mythological and geological significance of Oniishibozu Jigoku, Beppu’s bubbling mud pools, and their association with the concept of hell.
  • Material Experimentation: Used clear rubber tubes, metal stands, and colored glass spray to mimic the textures and colors of geothermal activity.
  • Structural Challenges: Designed a modular system that balanced flexibility and stability while maintaining the illusion of fluid movement.

Solution

A site-specific installation that visualized the rhythmic, dynamic energy of Beppu’s mud pools, blending nature and mythology into an immersive experience.

Outcome

A successful conceptual piece exploring natural phenomena through material experimentation.
Strengthened the connection between traditional storytelling and contemporary installation art.
